What the pellets do in the hole
Swell to seal
High-swelling sodium grade bentonite. It swells up to 40% of its original volume and creates a membrane where a low-permeability layer is wanted.
Stay sealed
The seal will not shrink and crack with time.
Hold the water back
Permeability as low as 10−8 cm/s by the falling-head method. MB adsorption above 370 mg/g, tested to the VDG standard.
Safe in the aquifer
Non-toxic and free from any toxic material, so it is safe to use in aquifers. No heat of hydration. Seals all types of standpipe piezometer.

What is Smec-Tight™ used for?
Sealing boreholes and sealing all types of standpipe piezometer — anywhere a low-permeability membrane is wanted. It is free from any toxic material, so it is also safe to use in aquifers.
How much do I need per metre of borehole?
It depends on the hole diameter: about 7 kg per metre for a 4-inch hole, 16 kg for 6-inch and 43 kg for 10-inch. Tell us your hole size, from 3 to 36 inches, and we will give you the rate.
Why pellets rather than powder?
Pellets can be dropped straight into the borehole, where they swell into a dense seal once wetted. They are uncoated, dust-free and give off no heat as they hydrate.
Is it safe in a drinking-water aquifer?
Yes. Smec-Tight™ is non-toxic and free from any toxic material, and it is safe to use in aquifers.
Will the seal shrink or crack over time?
No. The seal will not shrink and crack with time.
Does the water quality change how much it swells?
Yes. It swells by 20 to 40%, and the water decides where in that range: the more dissolved solids, the less it swells. Send us your water analysis if the seal has to be precise.
